3 years ago yesterday, Tom and I adopted our first song, Liz Phair's "Why Cant I".
It was a coooool Tuesday night, which as many know, is Tom's bowling night. He invited me to join him, but this meant we'd have to drive Anthony Baez. So, about 8pm he picked me up and we drive to "da hood." Basically where Kings Highway ends! lol.
Now, as usual with new relationships of any kind, your conversations are semi-limited. Even if you feel you can talk to the person about anything, you really shouldn't. lol. So, it was a upbeat, casual conversation about the events of the past few days, our work day, etc.
We pull up in front of this large apartment building, right off the corner and we wait. And wait. Oh yeah, and wait a little more. (I've come to learn since then that if Baez is ever involved be prepared to wait... bowling, softball, etc. lol) So he gets in the car and the "couple teasing" began. The fun part was being a spectator to Tom interacting with his friends. Now, I've seen him with others before, heck I met him at a party, but it's (usually) different when a guy interacts with his friends and a girl he's interested in is around. Notice how I said usually... usually, doesn't describe Tom, because he actually does act the same way with everyone. It was fabulous to see.
So we get to the bowling alley and the "psycho competition Tom" I've come to know and love came out for the first time. He was crazy, but not "run for the nearest exit" crazy.... Tom-Tom crazy. lol.
After a couple of hours of laughing and smiling we get back into the car and drive BACK to "da hood" to take Baez home. We dropped him off and as we waited for a light to change, the car went silent. Liz Phair's song was playing on the radio and both of us were listening. I got my sheepest grin on and automatically, without words, he knew EXACTLY what I was thinking. It seriously was chilling. We laughed, acknowledged the song and it's relevance to our situation.
He tooky my hand, brought it to his lips, kissed it and held it for a little bit.
To this day, for the most part, I still go to bowling with him. lol
